We wait all year. And now, it’s here. Founders Brewing Co. KBS is our Pint Night feature tonight. Sure, there are lots of Bourbon Barrel Stouts out there – a lot more than there used to be. KBS, however, remains unique in that it is cave aged in gypsum mines that run underneath Grand Rapids, MI. This results in a year of aging at a constant 40 degrees, as opposed to wide swings in temperature from Summer to Winter that most bourbon barrel aged brews are subjected to. Does it make a difference? Stop by at 5 pm today when we tap the keg, and you tell us! Our new NC Founders Rep, Kat, will join us with glassware and swag, and live music from The Hair People (Sean Olds, Dan Martier, and Nate Stockley), starts early at 6. Don’t miss out – check out KBS tonight!

We’ve got Spring Fever!

April 20th, 2017 Posted by Cheese Counter, Market, TRiO News 0 thoughts on “We’ve got Spring Fever!”

Literally. One of our favorite new cheeses in the case is Spring Fever from NC’s own Prodigal Farm. While all their other cheeses are made with milk from their own goat herd, this wrinkled-rind beauty is is their first cow’s milk cheese made using milk from the Jersey herd over at Reverence Farms. Both farms are committed to pasture-based, humane-focused animal husbandry and it shows in the quality of the milk and resulting cheeses. This one’s mild but with a surprising complexity for young cow’s milk cheese. It’s on the cheese board in the bistro today or just stop by the cheese counter for a taste.

Tonight we’ll be joined for Pint Night by Elizabeth van Noppen, from Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company. Founded in 2008, Devil’s Backbone has been reliably turning out classic, Old World style brews for years, and we’re excited to have them join us for another great event. We’ll have two tasty beers on tap: the light and thirst-quenching Pear Lager, and a collaboration between DB and Norfolk-based O’Connor Brewing, Tides de Mars, a Belgian style Biere de Garde. Elizabeth will also have glassware and brewery swag, and BJ Griffin will join us with live music to keep your Spring Break rolling along!

We wrap up our visit to the OBX. I am always impressed with the folks as well as the set up at Trio. Kenny Hyman, a former Richnmonder and the co-owner, has really put together a fantastic wine, craft beer and cheese retail shop.
